Zwarte Piet is a jolly character easily recognised by his Renaissance clothing, curly hair, red lips and blacked-up face. This black face is currently explained as Zwarte Piet is black with soot and dirt from going down the chimney to put presents in the shoes. Today; part 4 of our series is about the Dutch Sinterklaas tradition. Sinterklaas travels around on his big white horse, which can walk on the top of our roofs, and helps Sinterklaas to bring you your presents. Sinterklaas's horse is called Amerigo in the Netherlands and Slecht Weer Vandaag in Belgium. The Belgian horse is called Bad Weather Today because Zwarte Piet wasn't listening properly when Sinterklaas asked Zwarte Piet what he should call his horse. Zwarte Piet responded with the weather report and as such named the horse with this funny name. But who's this Zwarte Piet? More about that in our next part in a few days! Today; part 3 in our series of posts about the Dutch Sinterklaas tradition. The original Saint Nicolas left a coin in the shoe for whoever left out their shoe. Something still represented in today's tradition, by Sinterklaas leaving presents in shoes. So what do you need to do to get a present? Before going to bed, put your shoe near a chimney or front door and sing to Sinterklaas. If you sing well, Sinterklaas will come during the night and fill your shoe with a small present and/or candy. Besides singing, don't forget to put some sugar cubes or a carrot for Sinterklaas's horse in your shoe. More about his horse in our next part in a few days! Today; part 2 in our series about the Dutch Sinterklaas tradition. Where did Sinterklaas come from? The current tradition says that Sinterklaas is a saint for all children, who comes from Spain to the Netherlands to celebrate his birthday with all the Dutch kids. Originally, Saint Nicolas was a 4th-century Christian saint from Turkey, who was known for his secret gift-giving, putting coins in the shoes of people who had left their shoes outside. The current tradition tells us that Sinterklaas (or St. Nicolas) is the saint for all children. Each year, he visits the Netherlands and Belgium to celebrate his birthday (with all the children). Around the middle of November, Sinterklaas and his helpers arrive by steamboat from Spain (where he lives the rest of the year) and bring lots of presents and candy for the well-behaved kids.
