WAT IS EEN STROOPWAFEL?
Een stroopwafel is een rond wafelkoekje met een ruitpatroon, gemaakt van twee dunne koeklaagjes die bij elkaar worden gehouden door een heerlijk laagje karamel of siroop. Een traditionele stroopwafel heeft een diameter van 10 centimeter, maar tegenwoordig zijn er ook snackstroopwafels van 5 cm en jumbostroopwafels van 25 cm of zelfs stroopwafels gedoopt in chocolade. Je kan ook stroopwafels in ijs, als pepernotensmaak of als stroopwafeltaart vinden.
Dit heerlijke koekje werd begin 18e eeuw voor het eerst in de Nederlandse kaasstad Gouda gemaakt. Naar verluidt probeerden bakkers overgebleven deeg op te maken door stroop toe te voegen en er goedkope koekjes van te maken. In de 19e eeuw stond de stroopwafel bekend als een “armenkoek” maar tegenwoordig eet zelfs Koningin Maxima stroopwafels! Vandaag de dag zijn er nog steeds zo'n 20 stroopwafelbakkers en -fabrieken in Gouda..
HOE EET JE EEN STROOPWAFEL?
Je denkt misschien wat een rare vraag. Ik weet hoe ik moet eten, maar stroopwafels eten is een kunst en van een stroopwafel moet je maximaal genieten!
De beste stroopwafels zijn vers gemaakt, maar als je geen Nederlandse markt kunt bezoeken of er een zelf kan maken, dan is dit het op één na beste! Zet een warme kop koffie en leg je stroopwafel bovenop je mok. Door de hitte van de koffie smelt de siroop en wordt het bijna net als een versgebakken stroopwafel! Maar pas op dat het niet te zacht wordt, want anders kan je stroopwafel in je koffie vallen!
