WHAT IS A STROOPWAFEL?
A stroopwafel is a round waffle biscuit with a cross-hatch pattern. It is made from two thin layers of waffle that are held together by a delicious layer of caramel syrup.
A traditional stroopwafel has a diameter of around 10 centimetres, but today you can also find snack-sized stroopwafels of 5 centimetres, jumbo stroopwafels of 25 centimetres and even stroopwafels covered in chocolate. You can also find stroopwafel-flavoured ice cream, stroopwafel cakes and even stroopwafel-flavoured pepernoten.
This delicious biscuit was first made in the Dutch cheese city of Gouda in the early eighteenth century. According to popular stories, bakers tried to use up leftover dough by adding syrup and turning it into inexpensive biscuits.
During the nineteenth century, the stroopwafel was known as an armenkoek, which means "biscuit for the poor". Today, however, even Queen Máxima enjoys stroopwafels. There are still around twenty stroopwafel bakeries and factories based in Gouda today.
HOW TO EAT A STROOPWAFEL?
You may think this is a strange question. After all, everyone knows how to eat a biscuit. However, eating a stroopwafel is an art, and it should be enjoyed to the fullest.
The best stroopwafels are freshly made, but if you cannot visit a Dutch market or make your own, there is another great way to enjoy them.
Make yourself a hot cup of coffee or tea and place the stroopwafel on top of your mug. The heat from the drink softens the syrup inside and makes the stroopwafel taste almost like a freshly baked one.
