De oorsprong van het HOLLANDSE KUSSENDE PAARTJE
Er is niet veel informatie over het begin van het kussende boertje en boerinnetje. Vaak zijn het twee jonge dorpskinderen. Ze dragen traditionele kleding uit plaatsen zoals Volendam en Marken, boven Amsterdam.
Deze kleding laat zien hoe mensen zich kleedden in vissersdorpen rond 1900. Ze dragen houten klompen, een kanten muts, een schort en een vest. De stoffen hebben vaak strepen en felle kleuren. De kleding was praktisch voor het werk, maar ook mooi en met de hand gemaakt. Het laat trots en vakmanschap zien.
Veel mensen denken dat de beeldjes komen van een oude foto van twee kinderen: Jan en Grietje. Deze foto is rond 1920 gemaakt in Volendam. Op de foto geven de kinderen elkaar een kus. Een souvenirverkoper kreeg hierdoor het idee om beeldjes te maken van een kussend paar. Daarna werden ze snel populair bij toeristen en ook bij Nederlanders.
Vroeger had elke regio in Nederland zijn eigen klederdracht. De stijl, kleuren en details waren overal anders. De meeste kussende paartjes dragen kleding uit Volendam, maar er zijn ook andere variaties.
Vandaag dragen mensen deze kleding niet meer elke dag. Toch is het nog steeds een belangrijk symbool van Nederlandse cultuur en geschiedenis. Het kussende paartje laat een romantisch beeld zien van vroeger: kleine dorpen, windmolens, tulpenvelden en een rustig leven. Daarom is het een echt Nederlands icoon geworden.
Meestal kennen mensen het kussende paartje als een klein Delfts blauw beeldje van ongeveer 10 centimeter hoog. Maar in Zaandam staat ook een heel groot standbeeld van dit stel. Het beeld is meer dan 9 meter hoog en weegt meer dan 6.800 kilo. Je kunt het zien langs de fietsroute tussen Sloterdijk en Amsterdam Centraal.
